Pirates Attack Vessel in Bab al-Mandab Strait

A merchant vessel transiting the Bab al-Mandab Strait, approximately 15 nautical miles west of Yemen, was reportedly attacked by suspected pirates earlier today, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The UKMTO, a British Royal Navy operation, stated that the incident involved the vessel being pursued by smaller boats, during which gunfire was exchanged. The smaller vessels have since departed the scene.

The vessel’s captain confirmed that the crew is safe and unharmed, and the ship is proceeding to its next port of call.

Private security firm Diablous Group reported that the ship sustained two separate attacks. Armed guards on board returned fire. The company confirmed that the crew is safe and identified the vessel as a bulk carrier.

The Bab al-Mandab Strait is a strategically vital waterway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, separating Africa from the Arabian Peninsula. The region has seen increased maritime security risks recently.

While Houthi militants in Yemen have previously launched attacks in the area, ostensibly in response to the conflict in Gaza, and piracy emanating from Somalia has been a concern, Houthi attacks have reportedly decreased since a fragile ceasefire took hold in Gaza. The incident remains under investigation. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
