Six Detained in Lebanon Following Attack on UNIFIL Patrol

Beirut, Lebanon – The Lebanese Armed Forces announced today the arrest of six individuals in connection with an attack on a patrol belonging to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The incident occurred in the southern region of the country.

According to a statement released by the army, the UNIFIL patrol was targeted on the Al-Tiri – Bint Jbeil road. The attack resulted in damage to a UNIFIL vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the peacekeepers.

“The army immediately began following up on the matter to pursue the perpetrators. As a result of the follow-up, the Intelligence Directorate arrested six individuals involved in the attack,” the statement read.

The Lebanese Armed Forces Command emphasized the seriousness of any assault on UNIFIL personnel and affirmed its commitment to pursuing those responsible. The statement also highlighted the crucial role played by UNIFIL in the area south of the Litani River, emphasizing the close coordination between the peacekeeping force and the Lebanese army, as well as UNIFIL’s active contribution to stability efforts.

UNIFIL was initially deployed in Lebanon in 1978. Its mandate and size were later expanded following the passage of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which brought an end to the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The resolution aimed to establish a sustainable ceasefire and address the root causes of the conflict.

While a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon was reached on November 27, 2024, under the auspices of the United States and France, tensions remain in the region.
