Argentina’s national team coach, Lionel Scaloni, has acknowledged the challenge that Algeria poses on the global stage, particularly with the upcoming 2026 World Cup. In an exclusive interview with DZWatch following the World Cup draw, Scaloni emphasized the need to take Algeria seriously, expressing respect for their national coach, Vladimir Petkovic.
Scaloni spoke highly of the Algerian team and his past relationship with Petkovic. “Regarding Algeria, I know their coach very well. He was my coach at Lazio, and we are close friends,” Scaloni stated. “I’ve spoken with him, and I’m pleased to be facing him. They are a tough team, with many players who play in different leagues. They supply many European leagues with great players, especially in France and other countries.”
The Argentine coach further elaborated on the quality of the Algerian squad. “The Algerian national team is an opponent that must be taken seriously. Argentina must play all its matches to its fullest potential, whether it is the world champion or not. This will not change the way we approach the matches,” he affirmed.
Scaloni also stressed that his team is prepared to face all rivals in the 2026 World Cup. He cautioned that winning the tournament is never easy and requires a combination of factors. “Winning the World Cup is very difficult. I don’t have a magic formula for winning it. Several factors must be present: the team must be in top form, and the results, both ours and those of our rivals, must be in our favor. It also requires a lot of luck.”
In closing, Scaloni expressed his anticipation for a competitive Group Stage, highlighting the mutual respect between him and Algeria’s coach, Vladimir Petkovic. He described Petkovic as a “fantastic coach,” adding that “Algeria is a good team with great players.” He looks forward to the challenge.
