The Minister of Justice presented a draft organic law concerning the fundamental statute of the judiciary to the National People’s Assembly (APN) today. The session, dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the proposed legislation, was chaired by APN Vice-President Harchaia Abdallah.
Minister of Justice and Seal Keeper, Lotfi Boujemâa, representing the government, and the Minister of Relations with Parliament, Nadjiba Djilali, were in attendance. The Minister of Justice delivered a detailed presentation to the APN representatives outlining the substance of the legal text.
He emphasized President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitments to promoting justice and strengthening the position of the judiciary in Algeria. During his presentation, the Minister explained that the existing fundamental statute of the judiciary, which dates back to 2004 and was drafted under the 1996 constitution, is no longer adequate to address the political, social, and institutional transformations occurring in the country. He specifically highlighted the impact of the 2020 constitution, which significantly reinforced the standing and independence of the judicial branch.
The Minister further stated that the new draft law aims to adapt the judicial system to these constitutional developments. The proposed legislation comprises 110 articles distributed across various key areas. This revision seeks to modernize and enhance the effectiveness and independence of the Algerian judiciary.
This draft law is considered a crucial step in the ongoing reform of the justice system, aiming to align it with the evolving needs of Algerian society and the principles enshrined in the constitution. The APN is expected to continue its deliberations on the proposed legislation in the coming days. DZWatch will continue to provide updates on this important development.
