DZWatch Exclusive: The Algerian national team is set to undertake the most significant travel distance of any team during the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to preliminary data.
Estimates based on the match schedule and host cities reveal that the Algerian squad, Les Fennecs, will traverse over 4800 kilometers between Kansas City and San Francisco. This extensive travel makes them the team with the longest distance to cover in the group stage, even before the final qualifier from the European play-off Path A is determined.
Following Algeria in terms of travel distance is the team that will emerge from the European play-off Path D. South Africa, along with the representative from the FIFA play-off 1, are also expected to exceed 3500 kilometers in travel within the host nations.
Interestingly, Canada, despite being one of the three host nations alongside the United States and Mexico, will also be among the teams facing considerable travel. Their estimated travel distance during the group stage is expected to surpass 3300 kilometers.
Observers believe that this geographical factor could significantly impact the physical condition and recovery of players between matches. This is particularly relevant given the tournament’s unprecedented format, being held across three countries and a vast geographical area.
The 2026 World Cup promises not only excitement on the field but also a demanding journey for participating teams. Logistical challenges are expected to be a major factor alongside the sporting competition itself.
