Former coach Herve Renard has lauded the potential of the Algerian national team, suggesting they possess the necessary qualities to make a significant impact at the 2026 World Cup. Renard believes the current squad has the strength and competitive spirit to progress beyond the group stage.
Having recently witnessed Algeria’s performance firsthand in a friendly match in Jeddah, which the ‘Fennecs’ won 2-0, Renard expressed his confidence in their ability to perform admirably on the global stage. He emphasized that the team’s display left a lasting impression.
Speaking about the new generation of Algerian players, Renard highlighted the importance of Riyad Mahrez, whose progress he closely monitors in the Saudi League. He noted that Mahrez brings invaluable experience and technical prowess to the team.
When asked about a potential match between Algeria and Argentina at the World Cup, Renard simply smiled, stating, “I have no advice to give to Algeria. They know very well how to handle this level. Argentina is a strong team and a favorite to retain its title, but it must be wary of Algeria.”
Renard believes the circumstances surrounding the Algerian team create an opportunity for them to compete effectively. He expressed his hope that they will achieve positive results.
Renard maintains a special connection with Algerian football, having faced the national team on several occasions while managing Zambia, Ivory Coast, and Saudi Arabia. He also previously coached USM Alger. He revealed that he had been contacted by the Algerian Football Federation regarding the national team coaching position before the recent friendly, a role that was ultimately filled by Vladimir Petkovic.
