Algiers – Algeria underscored its commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship by hosting a dedicated ‘Diaspora Day’ at the African Startup Conference 2025. The event, held in Algiers from December 6th to 8th, focused on empowering Algerian entrepreneurs abroad and facilitating their contributions to the nation’s burgeoning startup ecosystem.

The Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of the National Community Abroad, Sofiane Chaib, presided over the Diaspora Day activities. The event also saw the participation of Kamal Sidi Said, Advisor to the President of the Republic in charge of the General Directorate of Communication, and Noureddine Ouahdi, Minister of Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-enterprises, highlighting the government’s strong support for the conference.

Mr. Chaib lauded the Diaspora Day as a landmark event, noting the significant and high-caliber participation of Algerian expatriates, including startup founders, entrepreneurs, project holders, and highly skilled experts from around the globe. He emphasized their valuable contributions to the conference and its growing importance in the African entrepreneurship and innovation landscape.

The government official explained that dedicating a day to the diaspora reflects the firm belief in the role of Algerian talents residing abroad in developing the startup sector, a priority area in the government’s program. This aligns with the President’s commitment to creating 20,000 startups by 2029.

Mr. Chaib affirmed that various state institutions are determined to continue supporting this endeavor and promoting the involvement of the national community abroad in the dynamics of innovation. This collaborative effort aims to consolidate achievements and drive knowledge-based and technology-driven economic development in Algeria.
