Iraq Coach Anticipates ‘Tough’ Clash Against Algeria

Doha – Iraq’s national team coach, Graham Arnold, has acknowledged the significant challenge his squad faces in their upcoming match against Algeria in the third round of the Arab Cup 2025 group stage. He described the encounter as a “difficult” and “complex” test for the Lions of Mesopotamia.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Arnold stated, “We have focused on recovery after the Sudan game and will conduct a training session today. The players are ready, and we are aware that we are facing a strong Algerian team.”

The Australian coach elaborated, “The Algeria match presents a considerable challenge. Having previously coached African teams in the World Cup, our primary focus will be on ourselves. We shouldn’t be overly concerned with the opponent, but rather ensure that our players understand their roles on the field. It will undoubtedly be a tough and complex match.”

Arnold continued, “My main concern is achieving a positive result in the tournament. I have only been in charge of the team for six months, and I am impressed with the level of performance shown by the local players. All players must be ready to compete. Today, our focus is on the Algeria match, and we are prepared for the quarter-finals, regardless of the opponent.”

He also addressed injury concerns and disciplinary matters, saying, “We have some injuries and four yellow cards, which will carry over to the next round. However, I have complete confidence in every player.”

The Iraqi national team has already secured its place in the quarter-finals prior to the third match, which will be held on Tuesday evening at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha. Iraq currently leads Group D with 6 points, followed by Algeria with 4 points, Sudan with 1 point, and Bahrain at the bottom with no points.
