Prague – Andrej Babiš, leader of the ANO party, was officially sworn in as the new Prime Minister of the Czech Republic today. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Prague Castle in the presence of President Petr Pavel.
Babiš, 71, and his ANO party emerged victorious in parliamentary elections held approximately two months ago. The incoming coalition government includes two smaller right-wing parties: the Motorists party and the anti-immigration Freedom and Direct Democracy party, led by parliamentary speaker Tomio Okamura. Together, this coalition commands 108 seats out of the 200 in the Chamber of Deputies.
According to the Czech constitution, the newly appointed Prime Minister is required to seek a vote of confidence from the Parliament within 30 days of taking office.
Babiš is expected to attend the upcoming European Union summit scheduled for December 18th and 19th. His presence at the summit underscores the Czech Republic’s continued engagement with European affairs under his leadership.
The formation of this new government marks a significant moment in Czech politics. Observers will be watching closely to see how Babiš navigates the challenges of leading a coalition government and addresses key issues facing the nation, including economic stability and immigration policies.
