Tensions are escalating along the disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia, with both nations asserting their unwavering commitment to defending their sovereignty. Renewed clashes erupted on Tuesday, following previous skirmishes that have undermined a ceasefire agreement brokered last July.
The ongoing confrontations have resulted in casualties on both sides. Reports indicate the deaths of seven Cambodian civilians and three Thai soldiers. The Thai military confirmed the loss of two soldiers and approximately thirty injuries since the resurgence of fighting.
Cambodia’s Defense Ministry reported the deaths of three additional civilians and around twenty injuries, some severe, since Sunday. This brings the civilian death toll to seven. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from border regions on both sides of the divide.
Thai military officials stated that clashes are occurring in five border provinces. An operation led by the navy in Trat province is reportedly underway to expel Cambodian soldiers. Allegations have surfaced that Cambodia is employing artillery, rocket launchers, and drones to attack Thai forces.
Speaking at a press conference, Thai Defense Ministry spokesman, Admiral Surasant Kongsiri, emphasized Thailand’s resolve to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity, stating that military measures would be taken as necessary.
The Cambodian Defense Ministry has accused Thailand of committing “brutal and unlawful acts,” claiming nine civilians have been killed and twenty others seriously injured. Thai officials report three soldiers killed and twenty-nine wounded in the fighting.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that Thailand should not use military force to attack civilian villages under the pretext of restoring its sovereignty. Both countries have reportedly evacuated hundreds of thousands from the affected border areas. Tensions have heightened since Thailand suspended de-escalation measures last month following the injury of a Thai soldier.
