New York (United Nations) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a call for the safeguarding of human rights and the protection of the world’s most vulnerable populations. Speaking at UN headquarters on Wednesday, Guterres emphasized the critical need to uphold fundamental freedoms and prevent the overlooking of human rights violations worldwide.
In his address, the Secretary-General underscored the importance of actively defending institutions dedicated to the preservation and promotion of human rights. He warned against complacency in the face of injustice and urged member states to strengthen their commitment to international human rights law.
‘We must stand firm in our resolve to protect those who are most at risk,’ Guterres stated. ‘Ignoring violations only emboldens perpetrators and undermines the very foundation of a just and equitable world.’
The Secretary-General’s remarks come amidst growing concerns about human rights abuses in various regions, including conflicts, political repression, and discrimination against marginalized communities. He specifically highlighted the plight of refugees, migrants, and internally displaced persons, calling for increased humanitarian assistance and durable solutions to displacement crises.
Guterres also stressed the crucial role of civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and independent media in holding governments accountable and exposing human rights violations. He called on governments to ensure a safe and enabling environment for these actors to operate freely and without fear of reprisal.
The United Nations, he affirmed, remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or any other status. He urged all stakeholders to work together to build a world where human dignity is respected and human rights are universally upheld.
