International Pharmaceutical Smuggling Ring Busted in Relizane

Relizane, Algeria – The National Gendarmerie in Relizane has dismantled an international network involved in the smuggling of pharmaceutical products, DZWatch has learned.

The operation, conducted by the Regional Group of the National Gendarmerie’s Research and Investigation Unit in Relizane, led to the arrest of five Algerian women and a foreign national. The suspects are accused of illegally trafficking and trading in pharmaceuticals.

The investigation began when officers from the Sidi Lazreg territorial brigade stopped a vehicle with foreign license plates during a routine patrol. An initial search revealed a significant quantity of insulin pens concealed within luggage. The driver and three female passengers were immediately detained and taken to the brigade headquarters for further questioning.

A more thorough search of the vehicle and its occupants uncovered additional insulin pens hidden within fabric belts wrapped around the women’s bodies. Authorities also seized sums of money in both local and foreign currencies, along with the vehicle used in the smuggling operation.

Working in coordination with the Public Prosecutor at the Zemoura Court, investigators identified two additional women involved in the network. The investigation was extended to a neighboring province, where the two suspects were apprehended. A search of their residence resulted in the seizure of more insulin pens and packaging materials used for repackaging the drugs for resale. Additional funds in Algerian and foreign currencies were also confiscated.

Following the completion of all legal procedures, the detainees and the seized items were presented before the Public Prosecutor at the Zemoura Court. The case is ongoing.
