Petkovic Reveals Details of Algeria’s AFCON Squad Selection

Algiers – National team coach Vladimir Petkovic has revealed intricate details surrounding the final squad selection for Algeria’s participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). During a press conference, Petkovic emphasized that the selection process was challenging due to the abundance of talent and varying levels of player readiness.

Petkovic explained that the technical staff had been working with an expanded list of approximately 45 players during previous training camps before settling on the final 28 who will represent “Les Fennecs” in the continental tournament. He noted that only 26 players will be allowed on the bench during matches, in accordance with the new regulations adopted by the Confederation of African Football.

The national coach expressed his hope to avoid a repeat of the situation experienced during the recent training camp in Jeddah, where the team was without seven players due to various reasons. He affirmed his confidence that all players will arrive this time with high spirits and a strong desire to deliver a commendable performance.

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Petkovic stressed that the upcoming phase will not be easy, particularly considering that some players are experiencing a lack of competitive rhythm, while others are actively involved with their respective clubs. This necessitates a balanced and precise preparation program from the technical staff that considers both physical and tactical aspects.

Petkovic further indicated that the technical team, led by the physical trainer, faces a significant task in devising a carefully considered preparation program to ensure the players’ readiness throughout the tournament. He concluded by revealing that training sessions during the Africa Cup of Nations will typically be held at 5:00 PM, except on match days, when the final training session will be scheduled around 11:00 AM, in line with the competition requirements and organizational conditions of the tournament.
