Algiers, December 16, 2025 – Argentina has expressed its deep appreciation for Algeria’s unwavering support in its claim over the Malvinas Islands (Falkland Islands). The acknowledgment comes as the international community marks the 60th anniversary of UN General Assembly Resolution 2065, which recognized the sovereignty dispute and called for peaceful negotiations.
In an analytical piece published today, Argentine Ambassador Atilio Berardi Hueda highlighted Algeria’s consistent advocacy for Argentina’s rights. He emphasized that Algeria’s support stems from a firm belief in decolonization as a fundamental principle of its foreign policy, a conviction rooted in its own history of resistance and independence.
The Ambassador noted that Algeria has consistently championed Argentina’s cause within various international forums, particularly the UN Fourth Committee and the Committee on Decolonization. Algeria has consistently voted in favor of resolutions calling for renewed negotiations between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
Furthermore, Algeria has played a significant role within the Non-Aligned Movement and the Group of 77 and China, contributing to strong collective statements affirming Argentina’s rights and urging respect for international law. Ambassador Hueda pointed to the 2015 Riyadh Declaration, which called for a halt to British military exercises in the disputed area and affirmed Argentina’s right to oppose the illegal exploitation of the islands’ resources.
The Ambassador also cited the 2013 Malabo Summit as a landmark event, where Algeria’s diplomatic efforts secured collective African recognition of Argentina’s rights over the Malvinas Islands.
Ambassador Hueda concluded by stating that Algeria’s principled diplomacy serves as a model for international relations, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to justice and self-determination. Algeria’s support, he stated, is not merely symbolic but a tangible contribution to Argentina’s ongoing efforts to resolve the dispute peacefully and according to international law.
