Algiers, December 17, 2025 – The Algerian government has pledged to provide significant assistance to individuals and companies seeking to acquire new buses for public transportation. This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transportation, Said Saiud, during a parliamentary session dedicated to addressing questions raised by members of the National People’s Assembly regarding the proposed traffic law.
Minister Saiud emphasized the government’s commitment to facilitating the acquisition of new buses, stating that “all necessary facilitations” will be provided. He clarified that there are “no issues regarding the importation of trucks,” paving the way for a smoother process for those looking to modernize their fleets.
The Minister reiterated the policy of phasing out older buses, specifically those exceeding 30 years of age, as well as a substantial portion of buses between 20 and 30 years old. He announced a phased rollout of a program to acquire 10,000 new buses intended for urban, suburban, and rural transportation. This initiative is scheduled to commence in January and continue through March or April.
Beyond road transportation, Minister Saiud also addressed the development of the railway sector. He affirmed that the government has a comprehensive plan to enhance rail transport through the acquisition of new rolling stock. This includes the purchase of passenger and freight cars, as well as various types of locomotives. Special emphasis was placed on acquiring high-capacity locomotives specifically for the Gara Djebilet mine, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting the mining industry through infrastructure development.
The move is expected to significantly improve the quality and efficiency of public transportation across the country, while also contributing to environmental sustainability by replacing older, less efficient vehicles.
