The Algerian General Consulate in Lille recently hosted a series of events to commemorate World Arabic Language Day, celebrated annually on December 18th. The activities, organized in coordination with professors from the Arabic Language Education Service (EILE), aimed to promote the Arabic language and culture among the Algerian community in France.
Children from the Algerian diaspora in Lille, under the guidance of EILE instructors, played a central role in the celebrations. The program featured a reading workshop and a theatrical performance entitled “A Journey to Algeria.” Participants also presented national songs and poems in Arabic, showcasing their linguistic talents and cultural pride.
In addition to the literary and performing arts, the event incorporated a variety of artistic activities. These included mosaic making, traditional Algerian tile art (Zellige), and the creation of original Arabic calligraphy pieces. These artistic endeavors provided children with a platform to express their artistic skills and creativity through their mother tongue.
The annual celebration serves as a vital platform for strengthening the position of the Arabic language among young people and reinforcing the cultural identity of the new generation of Algerians living abroad. By engaging in these activities, children are not only learning the language but also connecting with their heritage and fostering a deeper appreciation for Algerian culture.
This initiative underscores the Algerian government’s commitment to preserving and promoting the Arabic language and culture within its diaspora communities. The consulate’s efforts in Lille exemplify this dedication, ensuring that future generations maintain a strong connection to their linguistic and cultural roots. The event also served to promote the artistic and literary values associated with the Arabic language.
