Algeria and Burundi Strengthen Ties Ahead of AU Presidency

Algeria and Burundi have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and coordinating positions on key issues, particularly in anticipation of Burundi’s upcoming presidency of the African Union (AU).

The discussions took place on the sidelines of the second Russia-Africa Summit, where Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, met with his Burundian counterpart, Edward Bizimana.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the strong historical ties between the two nations. Both ministers expressed satisfaction with the current state of bilateral relations and affirmed their determination to inject new dynamism into the partnership through enhanced cooperation and coordination, especially with upcoming bilateral engagements on the horizon.

Minister Attaf congratulated Burundi on its impending assumption of the AU’s rotating presidency next year, emphasizing the importance of increased coordination and consultation between Algeria and Burundi to support the presidency and contribute to its success. He reiterated Algeria’s full support to Burundi.

Both ministers agreed that strengthening joint action within the African framework would support the continent’s efforts to consolidate peace and security and advance the path of sustainable development, in line with the aspirations of the African people. They highlighted specific areas where collaboration could be deepened.

The discussions signal a renewed commitment to fostering closer ties between Algeria and Burundi, with a particular focus on leveraging their partnership to advance shared interests within the African Union.
