San Francisco, CA – Tech giants Google and Apple have reportedly cautioned their employees holding US visas against international travel due to significant delays in visa appointment processing at US embassies and consulates worldwide.
Internal memos, first reported by business news outlets, indicate that law firms representing the companies have advised employees that some embassies are experiencing wait times of up to 12 months for visa stamping appointments. This backlog creates a substantial risk for visa holders planning to travel abroad.
DZWatch has learned that employees have been warned that they could face extended periods stranded outside the United States if their visa appointments are delayed or rescheduled. The delays are attributed, in part, to increased scrutiny of visa applications, including thorough reviews of applicants’ social media accounts.
Furthermore, recent policy changes enacted by the current administration regarding work visas for highly skilled workers are contributing to the processing bottlenecks. These changes have led to increased scrutiny and longer processing times.
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, previously advised its employees in September to avoid international travel, particularly urging work visa holders to remain within the United States to prevent potential legal or procedural complications that could hinder their return and ability to continue their employment.
These warnings come amidst broader concerns regarding immigration policies and visa restrictions, impacting both documented and undocumented immigrants, visitors, and tourists. Recent executive orders have further tightened entry requirements for citizens of various countries. The situation remains fluid, and travelers are urged to exercise caution and consult with immigration counsel before planning international trips.
