Over 107,000 Displaced in Sudan’s El Fasher Amidst Rising Insecurity

More than 107,000 people have been displaced from El Fasher city and its surrounding villages in North Darfur, western Sudan, following escalating insecurity. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that an estimated 107,294 individuals have fled their homes between October 26th and December 8th due to the worsening security situation.

The IOM statement indicated that the vast majority, approximately 72%, of those displaced remain within North Darfur, primarily in the northern and western regions of the state. An estimated 19% have sought refuge in other Sudanese states, including Central Darfur, the Northern state, and White Nile state.

Field teams reported that 75% of those displaced since October 26th were already internally displaced persons (IDPs). This includes individuals initially displaced from major IDP camps such as Zamzam and Abu Shouk, or from within El Fasher itself, during previous escalations of violence. They were then forced to move again after October 26th.

Movement restrictions and ongoing insecurity are significantly impacting displacement patterns. Routes are subject to change depending on the evolving situation and prevailing security conditions. The IOM emphasized that these figures are preliminary and subject to change given the volatile security landscape and rapid displacement dynamics.

The situation remains tense and highly fluid. The humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to deepen as a result of the ongoing conflict that began in April 2023. The fighting has led to widespread displacement and suffering across the country.
