Minister Orders Action to Ease Congestion at Algiers Port

Algiers – In a move to address persistent congestion issues at the Port of Algiers, the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transportation conducted an unscheduled inspection of the facility. The visit focused on the high volume of containers and the length of time they remained at the port, reportedly due to delays in pickup by economic operators. This situation has negatively impacted the normal flow of port activities.

During the inspection, the Minister emphasized the critical need for enhanced coordination between port authorities and customs services. He stressed that relevant operators must fulfill their legal responsibilities and that necessary organizational measures should be implemented. This includes the potential blacklisting of those who violate regulations.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with improvements observed in the maritime waiting area, noting a significant reduction to only two ships awaiting entry. This achievement was previously considered difficult to attain. He commended the efforts of port management, police, and customs officials for their effective coordination.

During the second part of the visit, the Minister assessed the status of quays 8 and 9. He issued immediate directives to accelerate the pace of ongoing works, ensuring adherence to established standards. He also emphasized the necessity of completing these projects before the summer season. Furthermore, he called for the expansion of the maritime station to improve reception conditions and enhance the port’s capacity to handle increasing traffic.

In closing, the Minister instructed the Secretary-General to activate inspection and monitoring units at all ports nationwide. This measure aims to ensure rigorous oversight of all operations and enable swift intervention to address any irregularities, thereby guaranteeing the smooth and secure functioning of port activities across the country.
