A3+ Group Affirms Support for Somalia, Urges Sustainable Funding for ATMIS

New York, United Nations – The A3+ group in the United Nations Security Council, comprising Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana, affirmed its unwavering support for the security and stability of Somalia during a meeting held Tuesday in New York. The group emphasized the critical need for adequate and sustainable funding for the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

The A3+ underscored that consistent and reliable financial support for ATMIS is paramount to preserving the security gains achieved in Somalia over the past several years. They highlighted the mission’s vital role in combating terrorism, maintaining peace, and building the capacity of Somali security forces.

“The progress made in Somalia is significant, and we must ensure that it is not jeopardized,” stated a representative from the A3+ group. “Sustainable funding for ATMIS is not merely an option; it is an imperative to consolidate these gains and pave the way for a more secure and prosperous future for the Somali people.”

The A3+ also called upon the international community to increase its commitment to Somalia, providing not only financial assistance but also technical expertise and capacity-building support. They stressed the importance of a coordinated and comprehensive approach to address the root causes of instability and promote long-term development in the country. The group reiterated its commitment to working closely with the Somali government and other stakeholders to achieve lasting peace and stability.

The Security Council is expected to further discuss the situation in Somalia and the future of ATMIS in the coming weeks. The A3+ group’s strong statement of support underscores the importance of continued international engagement to ensure Somalia’s progress towards a more stable and secure future.
