Algeria has embarked on a significant agricultural export venture, targeting the African market with a substantial surplus of onions, marking a new phase in the country’s agri-business sector.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, SARPA, the Algerian authority responsible for regulating agricultural products, initiated its first onion export operation on Thursday. A hefty 400 tons of onions were dispatched to Côte d’Ivoire, with the objective of absorbing the surplus production and protecting the interests of local farmers.

The ministry’s proactive measures this year have led to a considerable surplus in onion production, satisfying the national market’s demand and allowing for the creation of a substantial reserve for food security purposes. This surplus has enabled Algeria not only to stabilize its domestic market but also to strengthen its position as a food exporter in Africa.

This move reflects Algeria’s commitment to leveraging its agricultural overproduction to support its economy and reinforce relationships with neighboring African nations. The onion export initiative is expected to set a precedent for future agricultural export activities, positioning Algeria as a key player in the region’s food security strategy.
