Kyiv endured a massive Russian assault early Saturday, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread damage. According to the Ukrainian military administration, two civilians were killed and 30 wounded in the intense shelling of the capital. Reports from eastern Ukraine indicate six additional fatalities in Kharkiv and the Donetsk region.
In a contrasting report, Moscow’s mayor announced that Russian air defense systems intercepted and destroyed six Ukrainian drones targeting the capital. The aerial attacks on Kyiv triggered alerts across the city, with authorities warning of potential missile strikes. The assault has reportedly disrupted essential services, leaving over 2,600 residential buildings, 187 nurseries, and 138 schools without heating.
The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed conducting extensive strikes overnight and early Saturday, targeting Ukrainian military installations and infrastructure. The Ministry stated that hypersonic Kinzhal missiles were used, and all designated targets were successfully destroyed. These actions were described as a response to alleged Ukrainian “terrorist attacks” on civilian facilities within Russia.
Zelenskyy’s Response
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, stating that Russia launched nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles overnight, targeting energy and civilian infrastructure. “If Russia turns even Christmas and New Year into a period of destroyed houses, burned apartments, and destroyed power stations, then the response to this sick activity can only be truly powerful steps,” Zelenskyy wrote on X, urging the United States and Europe to intensify pressure on Moscow.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the attack reflects President Vladimir Putin’s and his inner circle’s true stance on the peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. He asserted that holding any referendum or elections is impossible under continuous Russian attacks. He mentioned the existence of red lines for Ukrainians, but also acknowledged that Kyiv and Washington are aware of potential compromise proposals.
Zelenskyy also indicated he would be consulting with European allies via video conference during a stop in Canada, prior to a potential meeting with President Trump to discuss further peace efforts.
