Arab League Greenlights Somalia’s Right to Self-Defense

Mogadishu, December 28, 2025 – The Arab League has strongly condemned the Zionist entity’s recognition of ‘Somaliland,’ reaffirming its unwavering solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia against any infringement upon its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

During an emergency session held at the level of permanent representatives, the Arab League Council issued a statement denouncing the recognition of ‘Somaliland’ as an independent state as an ‘attack on Arab national security’ and a destabilizing force for international peace and security. The Council emphasized that ‘Somaliland’ remains an integral part of the Republic of Somalia.

The statement cautioned that this recognition serves hidden ‘political and security agendas.’ It elaborated that the Zionist move aims to ‘facilitate plans to displace Palestinians or exploit northern Somali ports to establish military bases.’ The Arab League views the action as a serious escalation with potentially far-reaching consequences.

Furthermore, the Arab League affirmed Somalia’s right to ‘legitimate self-defense of its territory,’ as enshrined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter and relevant articles of the Arab League Charter. The League pledged its support for any measures Somalia deems necessary to counter attempts to violate its sovereignty, within the framework of international legitimacy.

The emergency meeting was convened at the request of Somalia’s permanent representative to the Arab League, reflecting a unified Arab effort to confront the Zionist entity’s actions. The Somali government has denounced the recognition as a ‘blatant assault’ on its sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning of its potential repercussions for the stability of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. The Arab League’s strong stance provides crucial diplomatic backing to Somalia amidst rising regional tensions. The situation remains fluid, and DZWatch will continue to provide updates as they develop.
