Algiers, December 29, 2025 – A national task force has been inaugurated to monitor the establishment of a comprehensive virus research center and vaccine production plant. The initiative underscores Algeria’s commitment to bolstering its scientific and health infrastructure.
The Minister of Health, Mohamed Sadik Ait Mesoudan, and the Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Kouideri, presided over the inauguration ceremony held at the Ministry of Health headquarters. The task force comprises 22 members, including representatives and experts from various sectors, including National Defense, Health, Pharmaceutical Industry, Industry, Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the National Agency for Health Security.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Health, the task force is entrusted with overseeing this strategic national project, which includes the creation of an integrated center for research in virology and a national vaccine manufacturing plant. The project aims to build advanced national capabilities in research, development, and production, ensuring national self-sufficiency in vaccines, sustainable health resources, and enhanced preparedness for future epidemic challenges. It also seeks to elevate Algeria’s scientific and health standing regionally and internationally.
Minister Ait Mesoudan emphasized the significant national responsibility placed upon the task force, requiring professionalism, accuracy, and adherence to the highest international scientific standards. He stressed that the task extends beyond project monitoring to include the formulation of a comprehensive scientific strategy through resource assessment and the unification of efforts across various sectors, aligning with national health and pharmaceutical policies.
“The success of this task force will be a true indicator of our ability to collaborate across sectors and an opportunity to transform health challenges into a lever for scientific progress and sustainable industrialization, a true pillar of the national economy and strengthening health security,” Ait Mesoudan stated.
Minister Kouideri affirmed that the project is strategic and aims to strengthen the national health system, anticipate epidemic risks, and develop high-level national expertise. He also noted that by uniting national efforts and mobilizing scientific, technical, and institutional competencies, Algeria can achieve its goals in public health and pharmaceutical independence.
