Algiers, Algeria – December 29, 2025 – Algerian workers will enjoy a paid holiday on Thursday, January 1, 2026, to mark the New Year. This announcement was made in a joint statement released today by the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, and the Directorate-General of Public Service and Administrative Reform.
The statement clarifies that, in accordance with Law No. 63-278 of July 26, 1963, which outlines the list of public holidays, New Year’s Day will be a paid day off for all employees. This includes workers in public and private institutions, administrations, public offices, and private companies across all sectors, regardless of their employment status – whether they are salaried daily or hourly.
“On the occasion of the New Year and in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 63-278 of July 26, 1963, including the list of public holidays as amended and supplemented, Thursday, January 1, 2026, is considered a paid holiday for all employees of public institutions, administrations, public bodies, public and private offices, as well as for all employees of public and private institutions in all sectors, whatever their basic law, including day or hour employees,” the statement emphasized.
The joint statement further stipulated that public institutions, administrations, bodies, offices, and companies must take the necessary measures to ensure the continuity of service in departments operating on a rotational basis. This ensures essential services remain available to the public during the holiday period.
This announcement provides clarity for both employers and employees as they prepare for the upcoming New Year celebrations. The paid holiday allows Algerian workers to enjoy the festivities and spend time with their families.
