Algiers, DZWatch News – Bertrand Traore, captain of the Burkina Faso national football team, has been sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following comments he made after their match against Algeria in the second round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Burkinabe Football Federation released a statement confirming that CAF’s disciplinary committee had imposed a $10,000 fine on the ‘Stallions’ captain. The statement further indicated that the fine was levied despite Traore’s apology during the hearing.
The disciplinary action stems from Traore’s criticism of the refereeing performance during the highly contested match against Algeria. Following the game, the Burkina Faso captain expressed strong dissatisfaction, alleging that the officiating had negatively impacted the encounter.
DZWatch News understands that CAF deemed Traore’s comments to be in violation of its regulations regarding media conduct and criticism of match officials. While the specifics of Traore’s comments have not been publicly disclosed by CAF, sources indicate that they were considered to be overly critical and potentially damaging to the integrity of the competition.
This incident highlights the ongoing scrutiny surrounding refereeing standards in African football and the pressure faced by players and officials alike. The sanction against Traore serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with representing one’s nation on the international stage and the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations set forth by governing bodies like CAF.
The fine must be paid within a specified timeframe, and failure to do so could result in further disciplinary measures. The Burkinabe Football Federation has not yet commented on whether they will be assisting Traore with the payment of the fine.
