ALGIERS – Algeria’s Civil Protection services responded to a staggering 1,206,004 interventions across the nation in 2025, according to preliminary figures. These interventions, spanning diverse emergencies, underscore the significant workload and challenges faced by the organization throughout the year as they worked to protect lives and property.
Data reveals that traffic accidents were the leading cause for intervention, accounting for 82,486 incidents. These accidents resulted in 89,888 injuries and a tragic 2,066 fatalities, highlighting the continued dangers on Algerian roads. The Civil Protection emphasized the urgent need for increased road safety awareness and responsible driving practices.
Incidents involving asphyxiation and poisoning from gas, including carbon monoxide, prompted 930 interventions. These resulted in 2,196 individuals receiving medical assistance, while sadly, 130 lives were lost. These figures underscore the critical importance of safe heating appliance usage and proper ventilation, especially during colder months.
Drowning incidents at beaches and various water bodies during the summer season led to 76,759 interventions. Rescue operations saved 53,228 individuals, but unfortunately, 261 fatalities were recorded. These numbers emphasize the need to respect safety guidelines around water and to swim only in designated areas with lifeguard supervision.
The Civil Protection reiterated the importance of adhering to safety regulations, particularly concerning road safety, the safe use of heating and gas appliances, and adherence to swimming safety measures. They urged citizens to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and promptly report any potential hazards to protect lives and property. Citizens are reminded that early reporting can significantly improve response times and potentially save lives.
