WASHINGTON, D.C. – US President Donald Trump has asserted that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife have been apprehended and flown out of the country. According to Trump, this action follows widespread strikes conducted in Venezuela earlier today. The Trump administration is reportedly evaluating potential replacements for Maduro.
Speaking later to Fox News, President Trump stated that Maduro was “transferred to a ship and will be transported to New York.” He further added, “We will be involved in who takes over in Venezuela and are making the decision currently.”
Trump described the operation as a “success.” As of yet, there has been no immediate response or comment from the Venezuelan government regarding these claims.
Earlier in the day, reports emerged of warplanes flying overhead and explosions echoing across Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, accompanied by plumes of smoke rising into the sky.
Eyewitness accounts from within Caracas describe hearing repeated explosions and the sounds of aircraft overhead, suggesting the attacks were carried out via airstrikes, according to initial reports.
Venezuela has affirmed its rejection of any attempts to alter its governing system and maintains its right to legitimate self-defense of its people, territory, and sovereignty. The government announced the activation of defense plans, the deployment of popular defense forces, the declaration of a state of emergency, and intentions to file complaints with the UN Security Council and regional and international organizations.
