For years, Algerian roads have become dangerous due to reckless driving. The consequences are dire, with a staggering 4,500 fatalities and 57,000 injuries, many resulting in permanent disabilities, reported in 2025 alone. This alarming situation has been exacerbated by a lenient system and fraudulent technical inspection practices, as highlighted by the tragic Wadi El Harrach incident.
The victims of road accidents are countless, impacting men, women, children, students, and the elderly alike. Citizens have repeatedly urged the government, whose primary duty is to protect its people, to take decisive action against those responsible for these tragedies. The proposed new traffic law might be perceived as ‘strict,’ but similar measures are common in many countries and do not concern law-abiding drivers who respect human life.
However, certain parties have already begun to criticize these measures, which citizens have long demanded to combat the daily terror on our roads. They are spreading the false notion that these regulations will lead to job losses in the transportation sector. Those behind this manipulation show no respect for the victims of road accidents or their families. They contradict ethical and political principles by falsely claiming that these measures infringe on freedoms – even the ‘freedom to kill.’
It’s important to note that this law has not yet been finalized or officially enacted. This fact alone suggests that these claims are merely attempts to destabilize public order. DZWatch remains committed to providing accurate and unbiased reporting on this critical issue.
The safety of our citizens is paramount. We will continue to monitor the progress of this legislation and its potential impact on road safety in Algeria.
