Road Safety at the Heart of Reforms: Details of New Traffic Law

A new draft traffic law encompassing a range of preventative and procedural measures aims to enhance road safety and reduce traffic accidents. The approach balances preventative action with deterrents, guided by a vision of sustainable road safety.

The draft law is expected to be presented to the Council of the Nation for discussion and voting. It is currently under review within the established legislative process and subject to amendments based on feedback, according to the Ministry of Interior. The Secretary-General of the Ministry discussed various aspects of the law during a consultative meeting with social partners in the transport sector.

The draft law, comprising over 50 new measures distributed across 193 articles, places significant emphasis on prevention, reflecting the state’s commitment to road safety. This includes regulating the institutional framework for road safety, imposing strict controls for safe driving, defining technical specifications for vehicles, implementing procedural measures to ensure driver safety, and regularly maintaining road infrastructure.

The project also includes equipping traffic control authorities with the latest digital equipment and moving towards automated monitoring via an electronic system for detecting traffic violations. The draft encourages citizens to report incidents and involves civil society in raising traffic awareness. Furthermore, it incentivizes excellence in safety by establishing a presidential award in this field.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has previously praised the draft law, emphasizing that its intensive and stringent measures are capable of reducing traffic accidents by addressing all elements of the organized traffic chain, from driving schools to vehicles and control devices.

Several associations and organizations active in the field of transport and road safety have lauded the President’s directions, considering them a practical step towards reforming the national traffic system and reducing road fatalities. Civil Protection services recorded over 82,000 interventions due to traffic accidents across various provinces in 2025, resulting in 2,066 deaths.
