Jamal Azar, Voice of ‘The Other Opinion,’ Mourned by Media

The Arab media landscape is mourning the loss of veteran journalist Jamal Azar, who passed away Saturday in London at the age of 89. Azar, a founding figure of Al Jazeera, was instrumental in establishing its core principle: ‘The Opinion and the Other Opinion.’

News of Azar’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from journalists and media figures across the Arab world. Many remember him not only as a skilled professional but also as a mentor and an advocate for balanced reporting.

Waleed al-Omari, Al Jazeera’s Palestine bureau chief, shared a poignant anecdote illustrating Azar’s character. Al-Omari recounted that Azar, before agreeing to lead a training course, requested assistance in visiting the English Hospital in Nazareth. Azar explained that he was born there, the only option available in the area at the time, after the death of all his siblings at birth, but he had no birth certificate and wished to visit, adding poignancy to his persona.

Al Jazeera eulogized Azar, highlighting his border-crossing career and his role as a teacher to generations of Arab journalists. The network described him as a journalist, a human being, a teacher, and an icon whose name is etched in the hearts and minds of millions.

Omani journalist Salem bin Salim al-Habsi described Azar’s passing as ‘the absence of a voice that believed in difference.’ Al Jazeera presenter Mohammed Krishan remembered Azar as a ‘humble, calm, and loving’ figure, ‘dedicated and devoted to his work as if he were in the prime of his youth.’

Khadija Ben Guenna, another Al Jazeera presenter, simply bid farewell to ‘Abu Dalal.’ Ahmed Mansour hailed Azar as ‘an ocean of knowledge in television journalism and the art of writing in both Arabic and English.’

Azar’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements. He is remembered for his commitment to fair and balanced reporting, and his dedication to fostering a culture of open dialogue and debate within the Arab media. His influence on journalism in the region will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.
