US Mulls Financial Incentives for Greenland Acquisition: Report

Tensions are escalating between the United States and its European allies as the White House reportedly explores avenues for a potential acquisition of Greenland from Denmark. Sources indicate that the Trump administration is considering a controversial strategy involving direct financial incentives to the island’s inhabitants.

This development coincides with a stern warning from U.S. Deputy President J.D. Vance, urging European nations to prioritize Greenland’s security. Vance emphasized that Greenland’s safety is a paramount concern for Washington, cautioning that European inaction could compel the United States to take unilateral measures. He also noted that Secretary of State Mark Rubio is scheduled to meet with leaders from both Denmark and Greenland next week.

According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, U.S. officials, including those within the White House, have discussed the possibility of offering Greenland residents direct payments ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 per person. The aim is to incentivize them to support independence from Denmark, potentially paving the way for a U.S. takeover.

These payments could amount to approximately $6 billion in total, representing a tangible mechanism for ‘purchasing’ the island, which has a population of around 57,000. This approach sheds light on how the U.S. might attempt to acquire Greenland, despite repeated assertions from authorities in both Copenhagen and Greenland that the island is not for sale.

White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt acknowledged that President Trump and his advisors are actively exploring ‘implementation mechanisms,’ emphasizing the administration’s view that Greenland holds ‘significant strategic importance’ from a national security perspective.

However, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Bourup Egede, responded firmly via social media, stating, ‘Enough… no more annexation fantasies,’ reiterating that the island is not for sale.

President Trump reportedly justifies his interest in acquiring the island by citing its rich mineral resources, crucial for advanced military applications. He also expressed concerns about Denmark’s ability to adequately provide for Greenland’s security needs. The situation remains fluid, with significant diplomatic and political hurdles to overcome.
