Aleppo Control in Question: US Signals to Damascus, SDF

Recent developments in Aleppo have raised critical questions about control of the city, particularly following the Syrian Army’s entry into the Sheikh Maqsood neighborhood and the withdrawal of some Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) elements. These events have been accompanied by regional and international reactions, most notably from the United States.

The focus remains on the evolving situation in Aleppo, specifically in Sheikh Maqsood, in light of clashes between Syrian government forces and the SDF. The US position and broader regional dynamics are central to understanding the future of the region.

Key questions revolve around the implications of the Syrian government’s attempt to assert full control over Aleppo and the impact of the SDF losing its leverage in Sheikh Maqsood, a card it previously used in its negotiations with Damascus. Furthermore, the message conveyed by the US stance on recent events and the potential role Washington could play in resolving disputes between the Syrian government and the SDF regarding the implementation of the March 10th agreement are under scrutiny.

The presence of Asayish forces remains a point of contention. According to journalist Ahmed Mohammed from Qamishli, claims of complete government control over Sheikh Maqsood are premature. He asserts that Kurdish forces are still present in the area and that sporadic clashes and artillery shelling continue.

Mohammed clarified that the footage showing buses leaving the neighborhood does not necessarily indicate the withdrawal of SDF fighters. He stated that the individuals on those buses were civilians, aged between 18 and 50, who remained in the area. He characterized the current situation as “street fighting in the alleys,” emphasizing that the situation remains fluid.

From Washington, James Robbins, a senior researcher at the American Council on Foreign Policy, stated that the recent developments “undermine agreements and progress made in integrating these forces within the Syrian framework.”

He emphasized that the United States remains committed to the March and April agreements. The future of Aleppo and the relationship between the Syrian government, the SDF, and the United States hinges on these developments.
