The Syrian Ministry of Interior has released a group of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) members who surrendered themselves and their weapons in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood of Aleppo. The release follows the completion of legal and security procedures.
In a statement released on its official Telegram channel, the Ministry of Interior stated that the release took place on Wednesday evening. Competent authorities had completed the verification of personal data and records of the detainees through specialized legal and field committees. The decision included those found not to be involved in criminal acts or participation in crimes against Syrian civilians.
The Ministry added that this step is part of the state’s approach to opening the door for the return of those who have ‘gone astray,’ provided their hands are not stained with the blood of Syrians, and in accordance with applicable laws and procedures.
The release reportedly occurred in the context of military operations in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood. Internal security forces secured the defection of a significant number of SDF fighters after calls from the Syrian Arab Army Operations Authority for the organization’s members to lay down their arms. The army pledged to secure them and take legal action against them.
Footage shows the released individuals leaving detention facilities. According to the Ministry of Interior, this reflects the approach taken to address this issue, based on individual settlements, legal scrutiny, and providing an opportunity to return to civilian life for those not proven to be involved in acts of violence.
This development marks a potential shift in the Syrian government’s approach to dealing with former SDF combatants. The long-term implications of this release remain to be seen.
