Washington’s stance towards Iran remains unclear, but analysts suggest targeted military strikes are a possibility. Such action would aim to exacerbate the Iranian government’s internal crisis while minimizing political costs for the US.
President Trump has recently escalated his rhetoric, urging Iranian protestors to continue their demonstrations and seize state institutions, promising support. This comes amidst heightened tensions and accusations from both sides.
Tehran, in a message to the United Nations, directly blamed the US and Israel for the deaths of protestors. According to the Iranian human rights website, HRANA, over 2400 people have reportedly died in the 17 days of protests. Iran claims these demonstrations have been marred by systematic killings carried out by militias funded by Washington and Tel Aviv.
While Iran has experienced numerous protest waves in recent years, the speed of the US response is notable. Within two weeks of the current demonstrations, Washington has moved towards threatening military intervention to support the protestors, according to international conflict expert, Ibrahim Fraihat.
Fraihat noted that Washington swiftly established red lines, directly called for protestors to seize government institutions, deployed a naval submarine to the region, and maintained a constant dialogue about the crisis. This represents significant pressure on Tehran.
Through this rapid escalation, Trump has placed immense pressure on Iran. Experts suggest the Iranians may feel compelled to concede on their nuclear and missile programs to avert a direct military strike.
However, the ultimate course of action remains uncertain. Discussions regarding potential strikes continue, even in the moments leading up to any potential implementation.
