Juba, South Sudan – Algeria has reiterated its unwavering support for the sovereignty and unity of South Sudan, emphasizing its commitment to the country’s stability during a critical period in its history.
The reaffirmation came during a ministerial working visit by the African Union’s High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan (C5) to Juba on January 14th and 15th, 2026. Sofiane Chaib, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of the National Community Abroad, represented Algeria at the meeting.
The visit, according to a statement, is part of the African Union’s broader efforts to support the peace process in South Sudan and monitor the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), signed in 2018. The focus is particularly on key milestones related to completing the country’s transitional phase and organizing its first elections since independence.
The initiative also serves to prepare for discussions on the situation in South Sudan during the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa in February 2026.
The program included a series of intensive meetings and high-level consultations, notably with the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, as well as extensive talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and members of the Transitional Government of National Unity.
Committee members also met with the African Union Mission in South Sudan (AUMISS), followed by a briefing for the African diplomatic corps accredited to Juba. Joint consultations were held with representatives from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), in addition to discussions with international partners and accredited ambassadors in Juba.
Furthermore, the committee engaged with officials from the National Constitutional Review Commission, the National Elections Commission, the Council of Political Parties, and representatives of civil society.
During his interventions, Secretary of State Chaib reiterated Algeria’s steadfast support for South Sudan’s sovereignty and unity, expressing Algeria’s unwavering solidarity during this pivotal moment. The Algerian diplomat emphasized Algeria’s crucial role at both the international and African levels in supporting sustainable solutions for South Sudan, stressing that the full implementation of the R-ARCSS remains the most suitable approach to achieving national reconciliation and overcoming the current situation.
