Zelenskyy Seeks US Security Guarantees Amid Energy, Ammo Crisis

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Friday that he hopes Ukraine will sign agreements with the United States next week regarding a plan to end the Russian invasion. However, he strongly criticized the slow delivery of ammunition from partner nations.

Referring to talks with Washington, Zelenskyy said, “We hope that things will become clearer regarding the documents we have prepared with the American side, and regarding Russia’s response to all ongoing diplomatic efforts.” He added, “If everything is finalized, and if the American side agrees, the signing during Davos will be possible.”

Both Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump are scheduled to participate in the World Economic Forum to be held next week in Davos.

Despite this hope, key points of disagreement remain between Kyiv and Washington. Ukraine continues to seek clarification from its allies regarding the security guarantees it will receive as part of the peace plan, guarantees it considers vital to deterring Russia from renewed aggression.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, announced Friday that negotiations would take place Saturday in Miami, Florida, between Ukrainian negotiators and the American side. She did not specify who would represent Washington.

Zelenskyy’s statements come at a time when Russian strikes have left thousands without heating in Kyiv for days, with temperatures dropping to -15 degrees Celsius. The capital’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, ordered the closure of schools until February to ensure the “safety of children.”

Zelenskyy also acknowledged problems with Ukraine’s air defense systems at a critical moment in the war. He explained that some of the air defense systems Ukraine received from Western allies have run out of ammunition amid a wave of Russian attacks that have destroyed energy infrastructure.
