Syria: SDF Withdrawal, Syrian Army Deployment in Aleppo

Significant developments unfolded in Syria overnight, marked by shifts in the military landscape east of Aleppo involving the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and government troops. Concurrently, a presidential decree was issued, affirming political and cultural rights for the Kurdish population.

SDF Announces Withdrawal

Mazloum Abdi, commander of the SDF, announced Friday evening the withdrawal of his forces from current contact lines east of Aleppo, effective 7:00 AM Saturday. Abdi stated this decision followed calls from allied nations and mediators, demonstrating good faith in completing the integration process and adhering to the terms of the March 10th agreement.

The agreement, signed on March 10, 2025, between the Syrian government and the SDF, outlines the integration of civil and military institutions in northeastern regions into state administration. It also mandates the reopening of border crossings, the airport, and oil and gas fields in these areas, emphasizing the country’s territorial integrity and the withdrawal of SDF forces from Aleppo to east of the Euphrates River.

U.S. Forces’ Movement

Reports indicate a meeting took place in Deir Hafer, east of Aleppo, between International Coalition forces and SDF military leaders. Visual evidence shows movement of U.S. military vehicles and SDF equipment along the M-15 highway, designated by the Syrian Army’s Military Operations Authority as a humanitarian corridor for civilians evacuating towards Aleppo city.

A spokesperson for U.S. Central Command confirmed that American forces had arrived in Deir Hafer, east of Aleppo, to assess the situation on the ground. The spokesperson added that U.S. forces are engaged in discussions with their Syrian partners, aiming to establish stability in the region.

The Central Command spokesperson emphasized that U.S. forces are closely monitoring the situation, stating that a stable Syria is vital for regional peace.

Government Response

Following the SDF commander’s announcement of the withdrawal, Syrian Army shelling of SDF positions in the area ceased.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense welcomed the SDF’s withdrawal from contact lines west of the Euphrates, stating that it would closely monitor the complete implementation of the SDF withdrawal.
