Senegal Stuns Morocco to Claim AFCON 2025 Title

Dakar, Senegal – In a dramatic and controversial final, Senegal defeated host nation Morocco 1-0 to win the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. The Lions of Teranga secured their second continental title in a match marred by officiating disputes and intense on-field drama.

The decisive goal came in the 94th minute of extra time, courtesy of Pape Gueye, after a tense and goalless regulation time. The match, played in front of a fervent Moroccan crowd, was filled with tactical battles and near misses, but neither side could break the deadlock until Gueye’s late heroics.

However, the game was overshadowed by contentious refereeing decisions. Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ngambo awarded a penalty to Morocco that sparked outrage among the Senegalese players. The decision was widely perceived as dubious, leading to heated protests from the Senegalese team, who briefly left the pitch under instruction from their coach. It took the intervention of star player Sadio Mane to bring them back.

Adding to the drama, Senegalese goalkeeper Mendy saved the ensuing penalty, further fueling the tension and excitement. The save proved crucial as Senegal went on to secure the victory in extra time.

This victory marks Senegal’s second AFCON title, adding to their triumph in 2021. The Lions of Teranga have established themselves as a dominant force in African football, showcasing their talent and resilience on the continental stage. While Morocco will be disappointed to lose on home soil, the tournament highlighted the growing competitiveness of African football and the passion of its fans. The controversial refereeing decisions will undoubtedly be a talking point for days to come.
