Senegal Crowned African Champions Amid Controversy

Senegal has clinched the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, securing their second championship in history. They defeated host nation Morocco 1-0 in a tense final that went into extra time. The match, held at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday evening, was a hard-fought battle characterized by cautious play from both sides.

The initial 90 minutes ended in a goalless draw, despite several missed opportunities, particularly from Morocco. Ibrahim Diaz failed to convert a crucial penalty in the dying moments of the second half, denying Morocco a potential victory.

Controversy erupted in the final minutes due to contentious refereeing decisions. A goal by Senegal was disallowed without video assistance, and a penalty was awarded to Morocco in a critical phase of the game. Despite the heightened tension, the match continued, and the championship was ultimately decided on the field.

Early in the first period of extra time, Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal for Senegal in the 94th minute with a powerful strike that the Moroccan goalkeeper couldn’t stop. Morocco attempted to equalize, but Senegal’s strong defense held firm, sealing the victory for the Lions of Teranga.

This triumph marks Senegal’s second AFCON title, following their victory in 2021, solidifying their position as a dominant force in African football. Senegal also extended their unbeaten streak in the Africa Cup of Nations to 18 matches.

For Morocco, the defeat was a bitter disappointment. Despite home advantage and strong crowd support, they were unable to secure the continental title, extending their wait of over five decades.

Both Morocco and Senegal will now focus on preparing for the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to take place this summer in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
