Mustapha Berraf, President of the Association of African National Olympic Committees (ANOCA), has commented on recent remarks made by FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the controversial events surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
Berraf stated, “I prefer not to delve into the specifics of the refereeing issues at this time, but it is crucial to emphasize the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and mutual respect. I will be meeting with Mr. Infantino at the beginning of February to discuss these matters directly.”
He added, “While it is true that some referees have occasionally influenced the outcomes of certain matches, it is our collective responsibility to address any problems through official channels, away from emotional reactions.”
Berraf also extended his congratulations to the Senegal national team on their second AFCON title. He emphasized the significance of cooperation and respect among all parties involved in the sport.
These comments come in the wake of widespread debate surrounding the 2025 AFCON final. The match was marred by contentious refereeing decisions, most notably the disallowed goal for Senegal and the late penalty awarded after a VAR review. This led to Senegal’s temporary walk-off in protest before play was eventually resumed.
President Infantino had previously expressed his deep regret over the scenes witnessed during the final between Senegal and Morocco. He stressed that certain behaviors on the field and in the stands were completely unacceptable.
Infantino stated that leaving the field in that manner, along with the actions of some players and staff, was unacceptable and that violence in football cannot be tolerated. He underscored the need to uphold sportsmanship and respect the laws of the game.
Infantino further added that the unsavory scenes that unfolded during the match should be condemned and must never be repeated. He reiterated that there is no place for such behavior in football and expressed his expectation that CAF’s disciplinary bodies will take the necessary measures to ensure the integrity of the competition and the safety of players and fans.
