Algiers, January 22, 2026 – The 19th session of the Executive Bureau of the Conference of African Constitutional Jurisdictions concluded today in Algiers, with participating bodies expressing their gratitude to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for his patronage of the continental event.
During the closing ceremony, a statement delivered on her behalf by Constitutional Court member, Messaoud Menas, reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for the Conference. Laila Aslaoui, President of the Constitutional Court, emphasized that President Tebboune’s high patronage demonstrates Algeria’s commitment to accompanying the Conference and supporting its efforts to consolidate constitutional governance and promote judicial integration within the African continent.
Aslaoui added that this commitment reflects Algeria’s deep-rooted policy of strengthening the rule of law, consolidating the independence of constitutional justice, and affirming its position as a fundamental pillar of institutional stability and the protection of rights and freedoms.
The President of the Constitutional Court further noted that the session yielded significant results, demonstrating the maturity of the Conference’s structures and the regularity of its mechanisms. A transparent and responsible assessment of achievements and gains was conducted, enhancing the Conference’s governance and ensuring the sustainability of its programs.
Discussions also included preparations for the 8th General Assembly of the Conference, scheduled to take place in the Democratic Republic of Congo in October 2026.
Aslaoui lauded the launch of the second edition of the award for the best doctoral thesis on constitutional subjects, aimed at encouraging academic research and supporting the efforts of African youth. She also highlighted the project to provide several African Supreme and Constitutional Courts with dedicated websites, enhancing transparency and facilitating access to legal information.
Moussa Laaraba, Secretary-General of the Conference of African Constitutional Jurisdictions, conveyed a message of thanks on behalf of the heads of African Constitutional and Supreme Courts participating in the session, to President Tebboune for Algeria’s hosting of this important continental event. The conference underscored the importance of continued collaboration to strengthen judicial frameworks across the continent.
