In a rare display of principle over profit in the world of professional football, Algerian international Bilal Brahimi has reportedly refused a transfer to Hapoel Tel Aviv, despite his Brazilian club Santos having accepted the offer.
According to sources, Santos and the Israeli club had reached an agreement for Brahimi’s transfer, which would have seen him leave the Brazilian side. However, the player is said to have declined the opportunity, choosing to remain without a club rather than play for a team based in what he views as occupied territory.
This decision leaves Brahimi in a precarious position, potentially impacting his career and income. However, he appears to have prioritized his commitment to the Palestinian cause above personal gain.
Brahimi’s time with Santos was brief, featuring in only one match since joining. Prior to that, he played for Nice in France, where he made 57 appearances, scoring two goals and providing five assists. His performances there attracted the attention of several clubs.
Brahimi also holds French citizenship, which could have simplified the transfer from an administrative standpoint. However, his allegiance to his principles seemingly outweighed any other considerations.
On the international stage, Brahimi has represented Algeria in four matches since 2022. His absence from recent national team squads is attributed to his lack of club stability and limited playing time.
Brahimi’s stance resonates with many Algerians, who have historically been strong supporters of the Palestinian cause. His decision is particularly significant given the increasing normalization efforts between some Arab nations and Israel. It also contrasts with the silence of many Arab and Muslim athletes regarding the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
