Consumer Group Warns Against Unregulated Skin Product Sales

The Algerian Consumer Protection Organization has issued a strong warning against the sale and use of skin treatments and ointments outside of authorized pharmacies. The organization specifically highlighted the dangers associated with unregulated sales of skin peeling products and potent chemical substances, emphasizing the direct threat they pose to public health.

The organization asserts that the marketing of these products constitutes a clear violation of existing health legislation. They cite the potential for severe health complications arising from their use without proper medical supervision.

Specifically mentioned were ointments containing strong corticosteroids, such as Betnovate and Dermovate, and their equivalents. Also flagged were chemical peeling products containing strong acids like retinoic acid (Tretinoin), high concentrations of salicylic acid, and fruit acids (AHA/BHA). The warning extends to skin-lightening creams of unknown origin, often containing undeclared mixtures and chemicals.

The organization stressed that the indiscriminate use of these substances without a proper medical diagnosis can lead to serious complications. These include skin burns, skin thinning, permanent pigmentation changes, severe inflammation, and disfigurement that can be difficult to treat.

Crucially, the organization emphasized that these products are not ordinary cosmetics. Instead, they should be classified as medications or quasi-medications. Therefore, their sale and use should be strictly limited to pharmacies and conducted under the supervision of qualified medical professionals. This measure is essential to protect consumer health and avoid potential legal repercussions.
