Syrian Interior Ministry Member Killed in Sweida: Official Blames ‘Rebel Gangs’

A member of the Syrian Interior Ministry was killed in Sweida province, southern Syria, according to a security source. The source attributed the death to a violation of the ceasefire agreement by armed elements.

The official Syrian Al-Ikhbariya channel quoted an unnamed security official stating that the incident was “part of a series of violations committed by rebel gangs against Interior Ministry posts in the Sweida countryside.”

The report did not specify the nature of the violation, nor whether the security member was killed by gunfire or shelling, and the precise location was not disclosed.

Sweida province has been under a ceasefire agreement since July, following armed clashes between Bedouin tribes and Druze military groups that resulted in numerous casualties.

However, groups loyal to Hikmat al-Hijri, a Druze religious leader, have reportedly violated the ceasefire on multiple occasions by targeting military positions. The government has maintained its commitment to the agreement, facilitating the evacuation of those wishing to leave and the entry of humanitarian aid.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, the government has been working to establish security throughout Syria. Some groups, however, continue to instigate chaos and bear arms, a situation that Damascus has vowed to prevent, asserting its determination to assert control over all territories.
