Education Minister Convenes Unions to Standardize Teacher Classifications

The Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Saadaoui, has formally invited representatives from accredited labor unions within the education sector to a crucial meeting scheduled for Monday, January 26, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Ministry’s headquarters in El Mouradia. The meeting aims to achieve a unified approach to teacher classifications and resolve outstanding issues.

This invitation follows the completion of receiving lists of names of employees made available to accredited labor organizations, with the goal of settling their legal and professional statuses in accordance with applicable legislation and regulations. This step also follows bilateral meetings conducted by the ministerial committee tasked with receiving proposals from labor organizations regarding the draft amendment to Executive Decree No. 25-54, pertaining to the special basic law for employees belonging to the specific ranks of national education.

The upcoming meeting presents an opportunity to discuss proposed amendments to the Executive Decree and to hear the observations and suggestions of labor organizations, thereby strengthening social dialogue and ensuring that procedures align with the interests of employees in the sector. Unions are advocating for the swift issuance of executive orders related to the law, a review of the compensation system to align with purchasing power, and standardized classifications for teachers across all educational levels.

Additional demands include increasing the responsibility allowance for supervision, applying retroactive effect from January 2024 for all ranks, classifying institutions according to their specific types, opening promotion prospects for supervisors and specialized educational trainers in primary education, revising training periods for promotion, and integrating education advisors originating as supervisors. Furthermore, key union priorities involve reviewing certain allowances, including increasing the promotion allowance from four to seven percent, reducing the retirement age for all education staff, and expediting the organization of specific executive orders.

These discussions are crucial for addressing long-standing concerns and improving the working conditions and economic well-being of educators throughout Algeria.
