Five-year prison sentence requested for fans who assaulted police officers

The public prosecutor at the El Harrach court requested on Thursday a five-year prison sentence for fans who assaulted security agents while performing their duties. He also requested a fine of 200,000 Algerian dinars for the 13 fans involved, including 10 currently in detention. Furthermore, he requested the imprisonment of an individual currently under judicial supervision and the issuance of arrest warrants for two fans who are fugitives from justice.

The details of the case date back to the Algerian Super Cup final between MC Alger and USM Alger, held at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki, Algiers, on January 17.

The judge set March 19 as the date for the verdict in this case.

For its part, the defense for the victims requested compensation of 5 million Algerian dinars for each victim for moral and material damages. The Public Treasury, which joined the case as a civil party, considered the facts to be serious, stating that the defendants showed no respect for the security agents responsible for protecting citizens or for their official uniforms. On this basis, it also requested compensation estimated at 5 million Algerian dinars.

The individuals were charged with disturbing public order within a sports facility, the misdemeanor of violent assault on public force members during the performance of their duties, and disobedience. These acts are punishable under Articles 149 bis 16 and 184 of the Penal Code, and Articles 238 and 239 of the Law on the Organization and Development of Physical and Sports Activities. The trial revealed details of the assault involving hitting, kicking, and the use of bladed weapons.
