Trial of “Fake General” Yacoub Belhassani Postponed

The Primary Criminal Court of Dar El Beïda has decided to postpone the trial of the “fake general,” Yacoub Belhassani, to the next criminal session.

The defendant, Belhassani, appeared on Thursday alongside co-defendant “Z. Mesbah” before the court, which decided to delay the hearing until the end of the current criminal session.

In the first case, the defendant faces charges of joining and participating in associations and organizations whose purpose or activities are terrorist and subversive, falling under Article 87 bis of the Penal Code. He is also charged with encouraging and financing terrorist acts, the misdemeanor of using a title associated with a legally regulated profession, and the misdemeanor of receiving funds from abroad within a group or organization to carry out acts intended to undermine state security, national unity, and territorial integrity. Additionally, he faces charges of fraud and participation in fraud.

In the second case, he is charged with joining a terrorist group active abroad aimed at harming Algeria’s interests, committing terrorist acts targeting means of communication and transport, intentionally obstructing aircraft navigation and flight safety, and intentionally providing false information known to endanger the safety of an aircraft in flight.

Regarding the second defendant, “Z. Mesbah,” the charges include encouraging and financing terrorist acts, the misdemeanor of receiving funds from abroad within a group or organization to carry out acts intended to undermine state security, national unity, and territorial integrity, as well as the misdemeanor of participation in fraud.

It is noted that several judicial rulings have been issued against the “fake general” in both criminal and misdemeanor courts. These cases involve phone fraud targeting high-ranking state officials, well-known political figures, senior executives, diplomats, and public bodies. He allegedly blackmailed them and extorted money by impersonating civil and military officials, deceiving them with promises of promotions and leadership positions in exchange for financial payments.
