Algeria vs. Nigeria: “The Greens” Aim to Write New History

The national football team faces Nigeria this evening at 17:00 at the Marrakech Stadium in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations, marking the 22nd meeting between the two teams. “The Greens” are looking to continue their journey in the African tournament and secure a spot in the semi-finals by overcoming Nigeria, which has shown strong performance during this edition.

The national squad has completed its preparations for the match, holding its final training session yesterday in Marrakech with most players present. However, doubts remain regarding the participation of midfielder Ismaël Bennacer and defender Tougai, who has not fully recovered from an injury.

The two teams have met on nine occasions within the Africa Cup of Nations competition; Algeria won four matches, drew two, and Nigeria won three. The last encounter between the two teams ended with a 2-1 victory for Algeria in the semi-finals of the 2019 AFCON in Cairo, where the “Desert Warriors” claimed their second continental title in history.

Regarding the officiating, the match will be managed by a Senegalese refereeing team led by Issa Sy, assisted by his compatriots Djibril Camara and Nouha Bangoura. Kenya’s Gilbert Kipkoech Cheruiyot will serve as the third assistant referee, with Peter Waweru Kamaku from Kenya as the fourth official, while Gabon’s Pierre Ghislain Atcho has been selected as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
